Dave Carroll is just a stand-up guy, apparently.

The Bellville Clear Fork coach installed an unorthodox defense for the Colts’ showdown against Ashland and All-Ohio quarterback Marcus Fuller.

Carroll called it the “stand-up 11” and, as the name implies, all 11 defenders were standing at the snap. There were times when all 11 would drop into pass coverage against Fuller and Ashland’s five-wide spread formation.

“I just don’t believe that there’s a point in continually having three or four linemen getting swallowed up by Ashland’s 300-pounders,” Carroll said. “You’re not going to get around them. It’s a lot harder to block the kid who’s in space than the one right in front of you who you can latch on to.”

The ploy worked as the Division IV Colts (7-1) raced out to a 42-14 lead against the Division II Arrows (6-2) then withstood an Ashland comeback for a 48-33 win. Fuller completed 33 of 56 passes for 358 yards and two TDs, but was picked off three times, once in the end zone and once on the Clear Fork 1.

RUSH WEEK: Springboro’s Jalen Campbell, back from a concussion, put 330 yards rushing and two TDs on Miamisburg in a wild 49-42 win; Haviland Wayne Trace’s Dylan Horner ran for 260 yards on 37 carries with a pair of TDs in a 27-20 win over Antwerp; and Dan Skiba ran for 259 yards and three TDs on 24 carries as Mineral Ridge rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Hanoverton United, 46-37, despite Josh McLaughlin passing for 381 yards and three scores.

RUSH WEEK II: Hamilton QB Brian Cleckley rushed 13 times for 250 yards and three TDs, and also threw a TD pass in Big Blue’s 42-7 win over Cincinnati Sycamore; Ashtabula Edgewood’s Devin McCaleb ran for 220 yards on 28 carries and scored on runs of 29, 37 and 58 yards and also returned an interception 28 yards for a score to lead the Warriors to a 33-18 victory over Gates Mills Gilmour Academy; Aaron Kemper ran for 218 yards and three TDs as reigning D-II state champion Winton Woods won its seventh in a row with a 55-14 win over Milford; and Martins Ferry’s Casey Bain carried 43 times for 214 yards in a 13-7 overtime victory against St. Clairsville.
