Symmes Valley FFA competes in county soils

The 2010 Lawrence County Soils Career Development Event was Sept. 17 at the farm of Jerry Stephens.
Schools attending were Symmes Valley and Collins Career Center.  Representing Symmes Valley were Scott Dial, Garret Crawford, Meghan Call, and Zach Litteral.
In urban soils Dial placed first Crawford placed 12th Litteral placed 13th and Meghan Call placed 17th.  In ag soils Crawford placed second Dial placed third Litteral placed fifth and Call placed 10th.
The urban contest consisted of determining if the soil was well enough to build a house on, place a septic tank in, build a road on, and place a garden, lawn or landscaping on the land by checking certain characteristics of the land and soil.
The ag contest consisted of checking the slope of the land, how much original topsoil was present, the type of soil, root restrictive layer, and natural drainage of the land that leads to determining the soil capability class and conservation practices.

YMCA to host 10th annual ‘Lights on Afterschool’ event

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Children and parents at the Phil Cline Family YMCA will celebrate the 10th annual Lights on Afterschool, on Thursday.

Lights on Afterschool is a nationwide celebration of afterschool programs that attract 1 million people to 7,500 events across the country to rally support for afterschool programs that keep youth safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.

This year at the Phil Cline Family YMCA, we will celebrate with inflatables, face painting, art activities with the Huntington Museum of Art, and Roller Skating at Roll-a-Rama skate center.

ASHLAND, Ky. — About half a dozen scarecrows will be sold in a live auction Thursday at the Main Branch of Boyd County Public Library.

The fifth annual Scarecrow Spectacular wraps up Thursday evening, which also includes a reception for all the scarecrow makers and bidders, starting at 6 p.m.

Another half dozen scarecrows are currently in a silent auction, which will continue until just before the live auction starts.

All funds raised through both auctions are used to fund library services.

Scarecrows can go home with the high bidders that evening.

Mine safety delegation from China visits Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A delegation from China is headed to Marshall University to learn about U.S. mine rescue technology.

The 25 mine safety specialists will tour the university’s engineering nisualization laboratory on Tuesday.

The group includes mining engineers, researchers and administrators from mining companies and government mine safety bureaus.

They will receive a demonstration of the lab’s capabilities related to mine rescue training.

The visit scheduled last week comes on the heels of a weekend gas leak that left at least 30 miners dead in China.
