SOUTH POINT — If it’s working, don’t fix it.

The Rock Hill Redmen went to their running game and it was the key as they notched their first win of the season by outlasting the South Point Pointers 35-28 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We were able to get our run game going and stuck with it,” said Redmen coach Todd Knipp.

“Our offensive line did a really good job sustaining blocks and giving us lanes to run through. Our backs ran hard and we were physical this week.”

Rock Hill’s offensive line of center Chris Donahue, guards Steven Moore and Andrew Schwab, tackles Andy Knipp and Shane Stewart, and tight end Jonathan Schwab helped generate 368 rushing yards.

Shane Harper had another strong game for the Redmen with 132 yards on 18 carries while quarterback Will McCollister ran 11 times for 126 yards.

South Point (1-7, 0-3) had its most balanced offensive effort of the season with 315 yards rushing and 82 passing.

Tevin Mitchell had 19 carries for a career-high 132 yards. Will Hill had his best effort with 67 yards on 12 attempts and Kyle Dickess added 54 yards on 12 tries.

Mitchell had a 48-yard run to the Rock Hill 3 on the first series of the game, but the Redmen defense stopped the Pointers inside the one.

Rock Hill (1-7, 1-2) then answered with a 59-yard scoring run by McCollister and Cody Massie’s kick made it 7-0.

“We played hard. We played better. We cut down on a lot of mistakes we were making. We still have along way to go. We’re just trying to get better every week. We played pretty physical,” said Knipp.

South Point came back to take the lead on a 17-yard run by Dickess and Mitchell added the conversion run.

Rock Hill regained the lead on a 3-yard run by Harper and McCollister threw to Jesse Lane on the conversion and it was 15-8.

The Pointers got within 15-14 on a 17-yard pass from Austin Majher to Josh Hamm, but McCollister had a 1-yard scoring run to make it 21-14.

Harper scored from 2 yards out and Chris Donahue’s conversion kick extended the lead to 28-14 at the break.

McCollister scored for the third time on a 43-yard gallop and Donahue’s kick opened up a 35-14 lead in the third quarter.

South Point scored on a 3-yard run by Larry Brandon and Majher passed to Hamm for the conversion and it was 35-22.

The Pointers recovered the onside kickoff and Majher ran 1-yard for a touchdown to get them within 35-28.

Another onside kickoff attempt was recovered by the Redmen and they ran the clock out to secure their first win.
