For at least 30 years, St. Joseph High School has hosted the Catholic Charity Fair, providing live music, raffles and all of the classic carnival foods with games and inflatables for the children.

“The event benefits the St. Joseph Central Catholic schools,” event volunteer Kevin Waldo said, serving up nacho cheese under the church concession tent. “All of the people that work it usually have kids or grandkids that attend the school.”

Among the awards raffled off are numerous gift baskets and $5,000. Raffle tickets cost $10 each.

“We’re so thankful to help and be a part of something that supports our schools and the Catholic faith,” volunteer Kara Cleary said. “I was a graduate and now my son goes to the elementary school. I consider it a blessing.”

Taking the fair stage Saturday was the St. Joseph High School Variety Show singers and band Southern Bones, performing a mix of rock and country.

The fair continues all day today, with band City Heat performing at 6:30 p.m. and Monday until after the Memorial Day parade.

Fr. David Huffman, priest of the church, said the event is not only the biggest fundraiser of the year, but it also benefits the community.

“We have three sources of income — tuition, the church and fundraisers and charitable donations, like this,” he said. “It’s good for the spirit of the community.”
