Opening day for the Ironton Farmers Market brought out the crowds, the produce and the plants.

Regular Cathy Knipp of Pedro, who for the past three years is there each week with her sister, Tammy Hanshaw, had a variety of plants for sale.

“We have some produce from down South,” Knipp said. “And we are starting the new year with plants to buy.”

She had bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage and petunias

“It is really going good today,” she said.

Another regular was Becky Wiseman of Pedro selling her homemade breads, yeast and sweet, and jams and jellies.

“I’ve added homemade noodles this year,” Wiseman said. “I enjoy the people and making things, baking and canning.”

The market will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Next Saturday is bicycle safety day starting at 10 a.m. The second Saturday in June will be the first Ironton In Bloom food fest featuring strawberry shortcake.

“It was a great day,” Sam Heighton, farmers market manager, said. “Everybody is happy. People made sales. Some people even sold out.”
