It’s the little things that mean a lot.
Ironton coach Larry Goodwin said his Fighting Tigers didn’t do the things they needed and as a result they lost 3-2 to the South Point Pointers on Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“Baseball is a game of details and we did not take care of a couple of details on the field and it cost us three runs,” said Goodwin.
“Also, we are not getting the big h its when we need them most. It seems like we wait until the sixth or seventh inning to get going offensively.”
Logan Wade went 5.2 innings for the win. He struck out five, walked four, hit a batter, gave up four hits and one earned run.
Douglas Shaffer pitched the final 1.1 innings for the save. He struck out one, gave up two hits and one earned run.
Larry Morris was the tough-luck loser for Ironton. Morris went the distance striking out nine, walking three and allowed two earned runs.
“Both Morris and Wade pitched well,” said Goodwin.
South Point snapped a scoreless tie with two runs in the third.
Drew Adams got a one-out single, Christian Pritchard walked, both moved up on a wild pitch and Douglas Shaffer got a two-run single.
The Pointers got what proved to be the winning run in the fifth.
Adams walked, Pritchard put down a sacrifice bunt, Shaffer reached on an error and Brandon Layne had a two-out RBI single.
Ironton got a run in the sixth when Dane Wilson walked, Hunter Klaiber walked and Jake Isaac had a run-scoring double.
The Fighting Tigers mounted a rally in the seventh that fell short.
With two outs, Wilson tripled and Morris doubled to make it 3-2. But Hunter Klaiber’s line drive back through the middle was snagged by Shaffer on a bang-bang play.
On Friday in league games, Ironton visits Rock Hill and South Point hosts Coal Grove.
