Open Door School decorates Easter eggs with residents at nursing home

Decorating Easter eggs is one of the oldest traditions of Easter, and on Wednesday, the intermediate I and II students of Open Door School decorated them with the residents of the Sanctuary of the Ohio Valley Nursing Home.

“Open Door’s been coming to do this for at least seven years, and it’s something we just love to do,” Debbie Osbourne, nursing home activities director, said. “We send the kids home with baggies with their Easter eggs in them to take home and the residents get theirs on their trays. We decorate eight or nine dozen eggs.”

Osbourne added that the residents really enjoy decorating Easter eggs with the students as well as spending time with children as a whole.

“I think the residents love it because it’s something they can do and have done in the past. They get the experience of what they did at home with their kids,” she said. “We do other activities with Open Door School and also have had 4-H groups in here. They just love children.”

Likewise, Open Door School intermediate I teacher Bethany Jones said the students enjoy spending time decorating eggs with the residents.

“It seems like they really like talking to the residents and going somewhere different,” she said.
