Those interested in exploring the world of creating watercolor paintings can get some tips and guidance from an upcoming free class at the Briggs Lawrence County Library.

Noted artist Pati Payne will conduct the class that will give the basics of what would be needed to learn to do watercolors. Then for those interested she will give lessons.

“Different people have mentioned they have been interested in watercolors,” Payne said. “I would offer this to anybody who would like to get started. I would show them what supplies are needed, compare brands and give an idea of prices.”

Then Payne will demonstrate a few techniques to give the class an idea of how to get started.

If anyone from the library class wants to study with Payne she will hold classes on the second and fourth Thursdays at the library for a fee of $25 per class plus supplies at $10 a class. The classes would run from 1-3 p.m.

“Some classes will have them all paint the same picture and have them finish a painting,” she said. “I would like to teach people the basics and have them practice the technique.”

The free introductory class will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Ironton branch.

Other events at the library include “Poetry Alive” by the Paramount Players as part of the ongoing Tri-State Big Read of the works of Emily Dickenson. This is a program geared to encourage a love of poetry for all ages. It will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Ironton branch.

Also at various branches Amy Ward will offer workshops where old books are folded to become a modified sculpture.

“It is where you take a discarded book, something you don’t use and go through and mark each page and fold the pages to that point and the folded pages can make a heart,” Lori Shafer, adult services librarian, said.

Books will be provided.

The first workshop will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Proctorville library; 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Chesapeake and at 2 pm. Mondaya, Feb. 29 at South Point.
