In a time when Lawrence County and the entire region are battling a drug epidemic, bringing awareness is key.

While it is always important to educate teens and adults, teaching our children at a younger age about the harm of drugs and other chemical dependents is vital.

That was the case this week when events geared toward drug education were held at Chesapeake Elementary.

Starting awareness at an early age, while presenting the information in a fun way, allows the children to obtain a better understanding. And, while some may not walk away with an immediate full understanding of the dangers of drugs, introducing these concepts now affords the ability to gain the needed knowledge over time.

The events were held this week in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, a concept founded in 1985 by the National Family Partnership and sought to teach citizens the dangers not only with drugs, but the ancillary risks involved.

Drugs and related activity have unfortunately placed a stranglehold on many individuals, families and communities in Lawrence County and the region over the past several years, and this even prompted a visit from President Barack Obama to Charleston, West Virginia, last week to address the rampant issue.

Ultimately, any preventive measures through education at any age can go a long way to helping reduce the drug problems facing our region.
