Fighting Tigers win 3rd straight sectional golf title

FRIENDSHIP — The Ironton Fighting Tigers are at it again.
The Ironton golfers put together a strong team performance to win their third straight Division II sectional tournament championship.
Ironton placed four golfers on the all-tournament team en route to a 318-team score, six shots ahead of runner-up West Union.
The Chesapeake Panthers were third with a 328 score followed by Gallipolis at 342 and Jackson with a 360. All five teams advance to the district tournament next Wednesday at Pickaway Country Club in Circleville.
Andy Holtzapfel, Jonathan Williams, and Josh Mullins each fired a 79 to earn first team honors. Josh Zornes carded an 81 and was a second team selection.
Ironton’s fifth scored was a solid round of 83 from Mason Weisgarber.
Chesapeake’s Nick Duffield came away with medalist honors as he shot a 73. Tanner Huntley of West Union was second with a 76.
The Panthers’ Seth Waggoner was a second team honoree as he shot an 81. Teammate Roger Hoback shot an 83 while Nathan Copley had an 89 and Drew Oxley finished with a 95.
The Rock Hill Redmen had a 396 score led by Joey Yaniko with a 92 and Nick McGuire with a 98. Drew Kidd shot a 102, Jon Schob a 104 and Jarred Collins had a 108.
Alex Earl carded a 93 to lead Fairland that had a 406 score. Bailey Manns was next with a 100, Hunter Schur 106, Tyler Blake 107 and Patrick McCoy had a 118.
For the South Point Pointers, Wyatt Hall led the team with a 95. Josh Suttles was next at 101, Caleb Jones 126, Austin Wellman 133 and Sean Gambill 141 as the Pointers had a 455 total.
Besides the top five teams to advance, the top five individual golfers not on a qualifying team also advance to the district tournament.
Advancing are Ian Roland of Portsmouth with an 82, Taylor Dailey and Daulton Kenyon of Portsmouth West, Saxon Nance of Piketon, and Blake Downard of Wellston, all with an 86.
The girls’ Division II sectional tournament will be Wednesday in Asheville.
