ROME TOWNSHIP — It was a chance to try out a different line of work and bring in some funds for Fairland East Elementary School.

That’s what the school’s seven kindergarten teachers did this past Tuesday when they took on some jobs a little out of their every day work description at the Proctorville McDonald’s restaurant.

During the dinner hour between 5 and 7 p.m. the teachers worked in the dining room, cleaning tables, greeting customers and busing tables.

“I gave them a percentage of our sales for those two hours and they got tips from the customers,” Chris Cielec, restaurant owner, said.

This was the first time for the Proctorville restaurant to invite teachers in to work, but it is a program the international chain has offered in its stores in the surrounding areas for some time.

“I think it went very well,” Cielec said. “They had a real good time. We will probably do another in the winter.”

Bonnie Dennison was one of the seven who worked those two hours and found it an intense way to earn some cash.

“It was very hectic. It was a very busy job,” Dennison said. “I thought it was a great idea. It sounded exciting to me. There were a lot of people and you had to stay busy. There were a lot of people. It was overwhelming with all the people.”

Some of those customers that night were the teachers’ students, who came just to lend their support.

“(The students) loved it,” Dennison said. “They greeted their teachers right off. They wanted to see their teachers.”

The take for the evening was $485 for the teachers’ work. All that will go to back to the classrooms.

“We are going to buy educational games, like letter recognition and math,” Dennison said. “McDonald’s has been so supportive.”
