DAYTON — Beloved father, Edward Nickel, 87, went to be with his Lord on Sept. 26, 2010, while living at Bethany Lutheran Village in Dayton.

Born in Huntington, W.Va., on May 22, 1923, he was preceded in death by his father and mother, Mark and Garnet Hanshaw Nickel and his wife of 46 years, Jean Mohr Nickel.

Ed was a resident of South Point, for 63 years. He served on South Point’s village council from 1956 to 1960 and was elected mayor from 1960 to 1962. During his administration, the first public water and sewer system for the village was installed.

Ed grew up a rough, tough young man who later in his life had his heart touched and made tender by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

At his passing, he was a member of Christ Temple in Huntington. He retired in 1978 after 30 years of service with Allied Chemical. Ed was a brilliant man who taught himself home and light-industrial electrical and plumbing installation. He worked tirelessly in these areas during off-shift times at Allied Chemical.

He also was an accomplished artist.

Most importantly, he was a wonderful, caring, and loving father who devoted his life to his family’s well being. Ed was a gentle and loving man. All who met him liked him and all who knew him loved him.

Ed will be greatly missed by his daughters Penny Nickel of Dayton; Dee Thomas and Brenda Reynolds of South Point; son John Bowers of Aiken, S.C.; son-in-law, David Thomas; daughter-in-law, Sheila Bowers; grandchildren Scott Thomas, Christy Thomas Crow, Vic Bowers, Robin Bowers Pelfrey, Andrea Bowers Baughan and Josh Reynolds; seven great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and one sister, Grace Robinson of Paris, Ky.

Services will be at noon on Wednesday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Friends may visit from 11 a.m. until noon preceding the memorial service.

A private interment will be held at Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point. Condolences may be expressed at www.schneidergriffin.com.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton, Ohio.
