Lady Hornets, Lady Panthers get straight sets VB victories

COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets decide to go straight.

Straight sets, that is.

Coal Grove took a straight sets Ohio Valley Conference volleyball win over the Rock Hill Redwomen Thursday, 25-21, 25-20, and 25-18.

Marissa Stevens led the Lady Hornets with 17 points and Haley Johnson scored 13 and Cami Hillier 11.

Johnson also had an excellent night of hitting with 11 kills.

“My girls played hard and never gave up,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Trisha Damron. “We are a young team and we are correcting our mistakes and improving every game.”

In the reserve match, Coal Grove won 25-19, 25-18, as Shelby Haynes had 15 points and Darrien Hankins 11.

Cheyenne Bellomy, Katie Erwin and Taylor Flemming had 4 kills each.

Chesapeake vs. Rose Hill

CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers are all even.

The Lady Panthers even their record at 6-6 with a straight sets volleyball win over the Rose Hill (Ky.) Lady Royals on Monday, 25-19, 25-13, and 25-14.

Amanda Ruffner had 7 kills and Marie Allen had 5 kills for the Lady Panthers. Kristen Webb had 5 ace serves and 2 kills while Caitlin Heffner came up with 25 excellent passes.

“Our girls played really well. They’re working hard every day,” said Chesapeake coach Dana Edwards.

In the reserve match, Chesapeake won 25-7, 25-16, as Abby Walters had 18 aces serves including 10 in the first game. Kenzie Moore added 9 kills.

Chesapeake plays at River Valley Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference match.
