During the month of October, many will see a plethora of pink ribbons in a variety of forms that can include things like pins and hair bows.

Additionally, many athletes and their respective teams will show their support with socks, sweatbands, tape and uniforms or apparel.

Many of these instances are in remembrance of a friend or family member or to raise awareness for breast cancer month.

While it is certainly wonderful to see all of these, it is also crucial that we remember and raise awareness for breast cancer throughout the year.

Having an understanding of one of the leading cancers in the United States can be one of the most important things we can do as a society.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 234,190 new breast cancer cases will arise in 2015 across the United States. Ohio ranks in the top 10 for new cases with nearly 9,000 estimated. This means that Ohio will account for almost 14 percent of the estimated new breast cancer cases in 2015.

We commend all those involved in a variety of events throughout the year to raise money for research, bring awareness and work to educate the public on this disease.

Ultimately, breast cancer, like any other illness, not only affects the individual, but their family, friends and community as well.
