SOUTH POINT — Opportunity knocked several times but the South Point Pointers just wouldn’t open the door.

The Pointers squandered several scoring opportunities in a 22-7 loss to the Boyd County Lions on Friday.

“We had some chances,” said Pointers’ coach Chad Coffman. “We blocked the punt and almost got it ran in, and we had a first-and-goal and we didn’t take advantage of that opportunity. Then we get back down there again and just don’t execute.

“It comes down to having to make plays and their kids lined up and obviously must have made some plays.”

The Lions took a 6-0 lead with 5:13 to play in the first quarter when Tanner Edmonds went one yard on fourth down. The conversion kick failed.

South Point (1-2) came back to take the lead on a 1-yard run by Devon Leonard with 6:42 left in the half and Reed Murnahan’s conversion kick.

But Boyd County (2-1) regained the lead for good a little more than two minutes later when Edmonds hooked up with Dalton Adkins on a 66-yard scoring pass. Edmunds ran for the conversion and it was 14-7 with 4:19 left in the half.

South Point wasted a couple of scoring threats in the third quarter.

Matt Keeney blocked a punt and the Pointers had the ball at the 9-yard line on the final play of the third quarter but they were unable to score.

South Point drove to the Lions’ 19 with seven minutes to go but stalled again when Christian Braly picked off a pass.

Five players later Edmonds got an insurance touchdown as he broke loose on a 74-yard run with 3:58 to play. He also added the conversion.

The Pointers’ ground game was led by Matt Keeney with 56 yards on 11 carries while Hunter Starr had 37 yards on 12 tries. Quarterback Brandin Jackson was 6-of-12 passing for 90 yards and an interception.

Edmonds 161 yards rushing as the Lions had 196 as a team. They had 298 total yards.
