A fire that damaged a house on Township Road 275 in Proctorville remains under investigation by the Division of State Fire Marshal.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined, said Shane Cartmill, public information officer for the fire marshal. Investigators have determined the fire started at an exterior wall on the right side of the home, Cartmill said.

The house, which was being renovated, was empty and not equipped with smoke detectors. A neighbor reported the fire.

About 25 firefighters from Proctorville, Chesapeake and Rome volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze, said Ed Webb, assistant chief the of the Chesapeake Fire Department.

The two-story house was fully engulfed in flames when the departments arrived on the scene around 8:30 p.m. With no fire hydrants nearby, fire fighters had to shuttle water into the area, Webb said.

“We had a tremendous amount of response,” Webb said. “At least eight fire trucks.” Firefighters worked until about midnight, he said.
