The jar of strawberry rhubarb jam just inched out the peach preserves by one vote. But a prize for an entry with the most unique ingredients could have gone to the pina colada jelly with shredded zucchini, coconut and heavy dollop of fake rum.

A Saturday afternoon jam and jelly tasting at the Lawrence County Museum was the last event before the historical society’s Walk at Woodland Cemetery on Sept. 26.

“We are going to have some new characters,” Kay Rader of the historical society, said. “I know we’re having Mary White Slater.”

Slater, who was married to pharmacist, James Slater, was a nationally known poet and magazine writer. She built the two-story house on Fifth Street, now the home of the Mack Anderson family.

Following the walk the historical society will host an old-fashioned bean dinner in October, just before the museum closes the last week of that month so volunteers can decorate the rooms of the Gray Mansion for Christmas.

Then the museum will re-open on Nov. 1 for a series of Sunday concerts through December, its annual tea and vintage fashion show on Saturday, Nov. 21; and church walk on Dec. 5.
