Want a local history lesson? The Lawrence County Historical Society is ready to offer one that won’t be found in any of the textbooks.

The group is set for the annual Woodland Historical Cemetery Walk at 6 p.m. Saturday. While admission to the walk is free, the historical society will be selling maps of the gravesites for $2. Participants are encouraged to bring flashlights.

Actors will portray some of the most famous historical figures from Lawrence County’s history, but focusing solely on the ones who are buried in the cemetery.

This event, the brainchild of long-time historical society member and local historian Naomi Deer, is a tremendous opportunity to showcase the heritage this region has.

Interesting characters drive history and bring it to life for people. Ironton and Lawrence County have

had more than their fair share over the years. The actors — all of whom are just volunteers that do this as a way to give back to the community and help the organization hosting the event — do their best to capture key elements of those who they are portraying in a way that is interesting and educational.

At one time, this event was commonly referred to as the Ghost Walk but organizers decided to change it in order to better represent the focus and the purpose.

That was a smart move for an event that educates in a way that is tangible and concrete. There is nothing ghost-like about this history lesson.
