Watermelon fest set for Saturday

The July 4th celebrations aren’t over yet as Ironton In Bloom weighs in on Saturday with a watermelon fest at the Ironton Farmers Market.
“We are going to be serving hot dogs and sauce along with fresh watermelon,” Carol Allen of IIB said. “This is to celebrate Independence Day. It is a little late but hot dogs and Fourth of July are a very nice tribute to our country.”
This is the second year for the IIB fests that started when member Mike Pearson suggested they host a corn festival at the market.
“They supplied the corn and we went down,” Allen said. “We had so much fun and it seemed to draw additional people to the market, which was one of our primary goals.”
The corn fest was followed by a tomato fest with fresh tomatoes and bologna sandwiches and a festival with fried apples.
“Now we come up with ones for five months from June through October,” she said.
The remaining festivals for the season are corn fest for Aug. 8; tomatoes on Sept. 11 and apple fest on Oct. 10.
IIB volunteers will start serving watermelon at 8:30 a.m. and hot dogs at 10 a.m. The free event will last until noon.
