Day delay doesn’t slow down Hornets

Coal grove quarterback Alex Bare (4) tries to elude the Trimble defense during Saturday night’s game. The Hornets rolled to a 49-13 win.

GLOUSTER — The Coal Grove Hornets didn’t think they’d get to play. The Trimble Tomcats wished they hadn’t.

A tornado that ripped through the Athens’ area on Thursday forced football games to be moved or, as it was originally thought, the Coal Grove at Trimble game would be cancelled.

Instead, the game was postponed until Saturday and the Hornets enjoyed the extra day of preparation with a 49-12 rout of the Trimble Tomcats.

“If anything, the extra day of preparation helped,” said Hornets’ coach Dave Lucas. “The kids were upset because they didn’t think they would get to play at all.”

Coal Grove’s Boo Woods ran like the wind as he carried 17 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns. The Hornets racked up 413 yards rushing on 58 attempts.

Jake Murphy had 80 yards on just three attempts and scored twice, Bubba Wood ran 11 times for 71 yards and Greg Bender added 56 yards on 12 tries with a touchdown.

Trimble’s standout running back Tyler Dyla was held to 69 yards on 11 attempts with 52 yards coming on one carry.

“Boo had a real nice game,” said Lucas. “But we played well defensively. (Dyla) has real good speed, but he only had one long run. Other than that, they didn’t hurt us.”

Trimble (1-3) was limited to 98 yards rushing and 41 passing. Coal Grove had 427 total yards.

Coal Grove (3-1) left little doubt about the outcome with 27 points in the first quarter.

Woods ran 2 yards and Wood kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Dyla had his 52-yard scoring run to make it 7-6 three minutes later, but Woods had back-to-back scoring runs of 15 yards and it was 19-6 with 31 seconds left in the first quarter.

After a turnover, Coal Grove got a 60-yard scoring run by Murphy and Wood ran for the conversion and it was 27-6.

Bender’s 3-yard scoring run with 2:15 left in the half opened up a 33-6 halftime cushion.

Dyla went 5 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, but Coal Grove answered early in the fourth quarter on a 19-yard scoring run by Murphy. Wood again ran for the conversion and it was 41-12.

The reserves finished up and Jake Jewell scored on an 18-yard run to cap the Hornets’ scoring.

Coal Grove has a pivotal game Friday at home against Greenup County, Ky.
