An 18-year-old from Detroit will spend the first few years of his adult life in an Ohio prison.

Marquies Bell pleaded guilty Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court to a third-degree count of trafficking in heroin.

Judge D. Scott Bowling sentenced the man to three years in prison with the possibility of a judicial release after two years. Bell must also pay a $5,000 fine and his driver’s license was suspended for one year.

Bell, along with three other Detroit-area men, were arrested in April following a two-week investigation into heroin trafficking at the Grandview Inn in South Point. The cases of the other defendants are still pending.

In other cases heard on Wednesday, Jeremy Byers, 32, of 701 1/2 Washington Ave., Huntington, admitted community control sanctions violations and was sentenced to nine months in prison.

Joe Webb II, 37, of 14284 State Route 7, Proctorville, pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree count of theft from Dollar General. Bowling ordered a presentence investigation and set sentencing for June 10.

Robert Willis, 33, of 35 Township Road 150, Pedro, was sentenced to four years CCS under intensive supervised from probation for a fifth-degree count of theft, to which he previously pleaded guilty. Bowling also ordered the man to complete the STAR program and 200 hours community service. Willis must pay $2,711 restitution to Pizza Hut.

Misty Callicoat, 40, of 623 Cliff St., Ironton, was arraigned on a fourth-degree count of DUI, to which she pleaded not guilty. Bowling continued bond from a lower court and added a $10,000 own-recognizance bond. A pretrial was set for June 17.

Kevin Newcomb, 27, of 689 County Road 52, Ironton was sentenced to four year CCS/ISP for counts of third-degree tampering with evidence and misdemeanor possession of drugs, to which he previously pleaded guilty. Bowling also ordered the man to complete the STAR program.

Jarrod Casey, 26, of 107 Center St., Coal Grove, was sentenced to four year CCS/ISP for a third-degree count of attempted burglary and probation violations, to which he previously pleaded guilty. Bowling also ordered the man to complete treatment at James K. Marsh House in Portsmouth.
