COLUMBUS — Putting a school inside the proposed health and wellness center at The Point industrial park is on the radar by county economic development leaders.

That goal would provide what those leaders believe is vital to attracting business — a holistic quality of life.

The value of that approach was touted during the economic development section of the chamber’s Legislative Day on Tuesday.

“Within our center we want to put a STEM (Science technology, Engineering, Medical) high school,” Dr. Scott Howard, director of the Ohio Strategic Training Center, an arm of the chamber, said.

The school for grades nine through 12 would focus on the medical aspect of the STEM career concept.

“We want to focus their education in that direction,” Howard said.

Adding a STEM high school to the center was inspired by a similar program in Akron, he said.

Building the 160,000 square foot center will be through a private-public partnership at an expected cost of $30 million. About half of the number of private partners have been secured by Signet Corporation, in charge of that search.

“We want to create a health and wellness center to help our region to balance work and recreation,” Howard said. “We want to help our business partners. Occupational health is a big issue for our business partners.”

Resources for injured workers would be available.

“There would be regimented activities customized for injuries,” he said.

The philosophy behind the center parallels one found in Europe of balancing work and recreation, according to Dr. Bill Dingus, executive director of the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation.

Dingus would like construction to start in 2016.
