SOUTH POINT — Construction should start in a month on the latest spec building at The Point industrial park.

Only one firm actually made a bid to build a 58,000-square-foot structure at the intersection of County Road 1 and Commerce Drive at the park.

John Mullins of Wheelersburg received the contract for the approximately $1.5 million project.

Two other companies expressed interest in the project, but did not place a bid, according to Dr. Bill Dingus, executive director of the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation.

The building will be geared for medium to heavy manufacturing with a crane-ready facility.

Initial site work is expected to start in 30 days with completion in seven months.

The same environmental firm that rehabilitated two former service stations in the western end of the county will clean up a now closed station on State Street in Proctorville. The LEDC wants to turn all three properties into viable commercial sites.

PetroEnvironmental of Cincinnati handled the work on the first two sites that took about two weeks for each location.

“They come on site with their labs and do the testing here,” Dingus said. “Smaller companies send the dirt away for testing.

Dingus said the job could cost between $50,000 to $60,000. The LEDC bought the Proctorville site from Cobra Investment LLC, which purchased it from Bulk Plants Inc. on Nov. 8, 2006 for $95,000. Bulk Plant bought it from Speedway in 2000. The site is appraised for $45,690 with taxes at $544.64.

The LEDC is awaiting permits from the state on the first two sites — on Marion Pike in Coal Grove and Third Street in Ironton — and a completed surveying report.
