Former West Virginia Mountaineer and Indianapolis Colts linebacker Steve Grant visited Rock Hill High School on Wednesday as part of Sports World, Inc.’s assemblies on encouraging positive choices, sponsored by the Campbell Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

Sports World, Inc. puts on the assembly every other year as different former athletes come in and speak. This was Grant’s first time at Rock Hill.

“We send a pro here every other spring to talk about positive choices,” Mark Lovely, regional manager with Sports World, said. “We want to bring awareness to them on things that they are challenged with.”

Sports World, Inc. is a national organization that has been around for 57 years and speaks to about 300,000 young people annually, Lovely said.

Lovely oversees Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Besides making good choices, Grant also talked to the students about relationship advice, never giving up and gave some stories from his life that have helped him get to where he is today.

“It’s always a win-win when we can get anyone that isn’t ourselves to talk about these topics,” Rock Hill High School principal David Hopper said.

While at West Virginia, Grant was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, was All Big East Conference and was named WVU MVP in both 1991 and 1992 and recieved Second Team All-American honors in 1992. Grant played with the Colts from 1992-1997 and was named Blue Gray Game MVP in 1992 and Colts Hard Nose Player of the Year in 1994.

“The No. 1 reason why I enjoy speaking to young people is because someone took the time to speak to me and have interest in me. I feel responsible to give that back,” Grant said. “I want to pass along all that was instilled in me to different generations.”
