Ironton golfers top Panthers

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — The Ironton Fighting Tigers golf team likes a good challenge.

Facing a solid Chesapeake Panthers’ team on their home course, Ironton rose to the occasion with a nine-stroke win Monday.

The Fighting Tigers posted a 158 score, just 14 strokes over par as a team.

Andy Holtzapfel continued with his strong play as he claimed medalist honors with a one-under par 35. Playing the back nine, Holtzapfel bogeyed the No. 12 hole but went back-to-back with birdies on numbers 14 and 15.

Josh Zornes stepped up and had one of his most impressive performances of the season with a 39.

Mason Weisgarber and Jonathon Williams each shot a solid round of 42 while Josh Mullins had a 43 and Josh Cooke a 44 as every Ironton golfer enjoyed a good day including reserve golfer Andrew Hicks who shot a 44.

Nick Duffield shot a 37 to pace the Panthers. Roger Roback and Seth Waggoner each carded a 41.

Ironton, now 50-3 on the season, plays hosts a tri-match with South Point and Jackson at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
