BURLINGTON — The fundraising efforts to recreate the original courthouse in Burlington have brought in $5,000 so far.

An ad hoc committee, headed by Lawrence County Commissioner Bill Pratt, has as its mission to build a replica of the 1816 structure that was once on a site by County Road 1.

Recently the committee received a 501c3 classification, meaning any donation received can be taken off federal and state income taxes.

The first check for $1,000 came from the Concerned Citizens of Burlington. That has been followed with a donation from Liberty Bank for $1,000; Bob Clyse Chevrolet, Buick, GMC for $1,000; Meyers-Neville-Baker law firm for $1,000; and Shawn and DeAnna Holliday for $1,000.

Cost to replicate the courthouse that stood near the Burlington Commons Park is expected to cost approximately $250,000. The goal is to use the structure as a community building and possibly have a genealogical annex there from the resources at the Briggs Lawrence County Library for eastern end residents.

A fundraising kickoff is scheduled for June 13 where those attending can view the site and architect’s rendering. Groundbreaking is planned for September.
