The team that organized the red carpet premiere event of the Mickey Fisher-written and produced show “Extant” at the Ro-Na Theater has again collaborated to celebrate the premiere of another Ironton native’s show, which is Kathy Eicher Mejia’s new show on VH1 called “Suave Says.”

The first show of the first season airs at 10 p.m. Wednesday on VH1 and from 7-11 p.m. on Saturday at the Ro-Na Ironton-area residents can be part of Ironton’s Hollywood-like event.

“We’ve gotten a pretty good team together to put this event on,” Dick Fisher, event co-organizer, said. “I don’t know what kind of event this will turn out to be but we wanted to make sure we stepped up and gave Kathy and (her husband Gerardo) a bump for doing so well.”

Gerardo rose to the top of the music charts in the early 1990s with his hit single “Rico Suave.” He has since transitioned into a career as a powerful music executive and started a family.

According to VH1’s website, “Suave Says” follows the day-to-day lives of Gerardo and Kathy, their rapping son, Jaden, niece, Lexi, and daughters Bianca, a fashionista, and Nadia, an aspiring singer and “Miss Teen Beverly Hills” titleholder.

“Suave Says” will be shown in 10 30-minute episodes, according to VH1.

“The Mejia family will be introduced and a rerun of this coming Wednesday’s Suave Says premier will be shown,” Fisher said. “There will be a red carpet and a custom backdrop for people to take pictures, just like at a Hollywood premiere.”

Fisher said the carpet and backdrop could be moved inside if there’s inclement weather.

“The plan is to take advantage of the show to not only promote Ironton, but also have some fun,” he said. “The Mejia’s have confirmed they will be there and everyone is looking forward to it. The show is going to be great.”

Everyone who shows up to the event can have their pictures taken on the red carpet.

“We didn’t want the opportunity to pass by and not do this for (the Mejia’s) and this city,” Fisher said. “Except for the drinks at the bar, everything is free and everything will be fun. We’ve got this cool little town with so many great people and we need to showcase both whenever we can. This is a chance to do just that.”

Free refreshments will be available and the Friends of Ironton will have the Ro-Na’s cash bar open.

Fisher is co-organizing the event with the Friends of Ironton, Ironton aLive, FYI Ironton, the city of Ironton and Ohio University Southern’s Brad Bear.
