Bikes, volunteers needed for annual giveaway

The goal for this year’s fourth annual Lawrence County Bicycle Giveaway is to give bikes to 350 young people in the community for Christmas. Co-organizer of the giveaway John Dickess said bikes, volunteers and other items are still needed.
“We are 150 bikes short of our goal right now,” Dickess, who organizes the bike giveaway with Don Schwartz, said. “We also need volunteers to help us put the bikes together on Dec. 5.”
An ATV raffle is ongoing and tickets can be purchased at Dickess Auto Repair, 212 S. Sixth St., or Advance Auto Parts, 615 Park Ave.
“We are also looking for a group to donate treat bags with candy to hand out at the giveaway,” Dickess said. “We usually get gift cards for groceries to give away as well and we haven’t gotten any yet. We could really use those, too.”
The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the Ironton Health Department are helping raise money for the giveaway.
Nearly 250 bikes were given away last Christmas. Donations are always accepted. This year’s Lawrence County Bicycle Giveaway is at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, in the Ironton High School Auditorium.
