PEDRO — There’s something lurking in the woods behind the Pedro Fire Station. Actually, there are lots of things.
“We’re doing pretty well,” Jerry Massie, chief of the Elizabeth Township Fire Department, said. “We look to make next year even bigger and better.”
The Elizabeth Township Volunteer Fire Department has begun its Haunted Trail in the woods behind the station in Pedro. The idea for the trail happened when members of the department approached Massie about needing tools for the fire engines.
“The guys said the trucks needed some tools,” he said. “I told them there wasn’t money in the budget for the tools so we had to figure out a way to raise money and this is what we came up with.”
So far, the Haunted Trail is a hit with residents. Open at 8 p.m. every Friday and Saturday throughout October, more than 250 have paid the $5 admission charge so far, and the total would be more, Chief Massie said, but one night was canceled because of rain.
“We just put it together and went with it,” Brandon Massie, firefighter, said. “We don’t close until there’s nobody left in line.”
Chief Massie said the trail, based on what he’s seen and heard so far, should become an annual event.
“We’ve had a great response,” he said. “People seem to really be enjoying it.”
The Pedro Station is located at 127 Township Road 113. Signs on State Route 93 direct people to the trail.
