Ironton In Bloom’s Business of the Month Award for September was presented to the Lawrence County Historical Society Museum.

The Ironton Garden Club has maintained the grounds of the museum since 2000. Landscaping includes roses, butterfly bushes, day lilies, hosta and many colorful annuals that have been tended all summer by the Hannon family.

The museum, known as the Gray House, is on the Register of Historic Ohio Homes in the Rankin District. The Gray family owned iron furnaces in the area. A stone in the garden was placed there to honor their son who was killed in the Spanish American War. The family bought the former home of Ironmaster W.D. Kelly and established the Charles Sedgwick Gray Deaconess Hospital in memory of their son.

Two dogwood trees in the tree lawn have markers that recognize Viola Pool and Maridel Davidson, who were among the founders of the Ironton Garden Club.

The next activity on the museum lawn will be the annual Old-Fashioned Bean Dinner starting at 11 a.m. on Oct. 11. This will be an opportunity to tour the museum and lawn. It is located at 506 S. Sixth St., and everyone is welcome.
