PROCTORVILLE — Maybe the Fairland Dragons need to get St. Mary’s Hospital to sponsor their football team.

Fairland was missing six starters with injuries on Friday and the short-handed Dragons were unable to stop the Gallipolis running game as the Blue Devils raced to a 55-37 win.

Gallipolis (2-1) ran 49 times for 408 yards and finished with 462 total yards. Eli Miller carried 13 times for 165 yards and two scores and quarterback Kole Carter picked up 117 yards on 19 totes with two scores.

Wes Jarrell ran nine times for 67 yards and also returned a punt for a touchdown. Blake Wilson had 59 yards on eight tries and two TDs.

Fairland quarterback Chance Short had a second straight big game for the Dragons. He was 27 of 44 for 276 yards and four touchdowns.

Colton Brumfield had 20 carries for 121 yards as Fairland racked up 416 total yards.

Fairland was down 41-21 entering the fourth quarter, but Short hit Dylan Mprhy with a 15-yard scoring pass on the first play of the quarter and a 6-yard scoring run by Brumfield with 7:21 to play cut the deficit to 41-37.

But the Blue Devils went back to their running game as Wilson broke free on a 33-yard scoring run and it was 48-37.

Carter iced the win with a 10-yard scoring jaunt with just 1:30 to play.

Gallipolis led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter on Wilson’s 5-yard run and Jarrell’s 59-yard punt return. Murphy — who had 11 receptions for 127 yards — got two of his three TD catches on grabs of 2 and 27 yards.

Miller had a 1-yard scoring run in the second quarter to make it 21-7 at the half.

Carter ran 44 yards for a score and threw 30 yards to Russell Mathew as Gallipolis built a 35-7 lead in the third quarter.

Austin Christian caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Short to make it 35-15 but Miller raced 50 yards moments later and it was 41-15.
