A possible half-million dollars in cost savings was among the topics discussed during a meeting with state and county officials concerning moving the county jail to Scioto County, according to Commissioner Les Boggs.

Gary Mohr, director of the state department of rehabilitation and corrections, came to the STAR Community Justice Center on Monday to get an update on the move from Boggs and Sheriff Jeff Lawless.

Only Boggs was invited to the meeting in order that it could be conducted out of the public eye because of what the commissioner termed “sensitive matters,” “Boggs said after Thursday’s commission meeting.

“There could be some shared services,” Boggs said.

The state is hoping that STAR and the county jail can be set up at the now closed Ohio River Valley Juvenile Correctional Facility by January.

On Wednesday Boggs will be in a conference call with state officials to continue working on the transition. The call starts at 10 a.m. and is expected to last 90 minutes, Boggs said.

During the commissioners’ regular meeting Randy Franz, of juvenile probate court, was honored for his efforts to save an Ironton High School student who was pulled from the pool at Sta-Tan earlier this month.

Franz was among those at the pool who worked to resuscitate Albert Schoener.

“We want to honor your heroic efforts,” Boggs told Franz. “You are one of our own. You are a great citizen, a model person. You are one person who took the time to learn CPR.”

In other action the commission:

• Hired John Higgins as a part-time paramedic for the county EMS;

• Accepted the resignation of Kyle Parrill as a full-time paramedic;

• Approved purchase of five fire hydrants for the Village of Proctorville and;

• Received the weekly dog warden report where no dogs were destroyed, eight were adopted or went to rescue and three were redeemed by their owners.
