The Ironton and Proctorville campuses of Ohio University Southern on Monday began the fall semester and a student welcome station was set up in the Shafer Courtyard to make the first day — whether freshman or senior — as enjoyable as possible.

The welcome station provided free food and information for all students as well as corn hole and trivia about either the Woodstock Music Festival or first-year dean Dr. Nicole Pennington.

“It’s going well,” Michelle Dotts, activities assistant said. “We’ve been able to help a lot of people. We have seen some familiar faces and a lot of new faces as well.”

Students spun a wheel that determined which question they would be posed. If answered correctly they won prizes such as composition books, gift cards and T-shirts.

“How’s the trivia going?” Pennington asked as she approached the wheel. “I hope everyone is doing well.”

Pennington said she enjoyed compiling questions, but after she did decided to make them multiple choice to give students a better chance of winning.

Arriving for his first-ever college class was Jordan Clifton, of Ironton. The freshman said going to OUS was a no-brainer until he decided on a major.

“The location and the quality of education is why I’m here,” he said. “I’ll be here until I decide fully what I want to do. I’m excited to start classes today. The way I see it every time I go to class that’s one class closer I am to graduating college.”

Tie-dyed T-shirts, tank tops and bandanas were for sale by the OUS Art Collaborative with proceeds going toward the OUSAC art scholarship.

Festivities to celebrate the beginning of the fall semester continue throughout the week with an ice cream social from 2-6 p.m. on Wednesday in the Riffe Center Mains Rotunda and a celebration to welcome dean Pennington from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday in the Shafer Courtyard.

Thursday’s welcome and celebration will feature live entertainment by the Woodstock Nation Band, a costume contest and a pizza party.
