Ironton wastewater superintendent Mike Shaw told city council this past Thursday that aging and overworked equipment at the East Ring Road pump station is in need of repair.

“It’s 30 years old,” Shaw said. “It just needs some work done to it.”

Shaw said controls, pumps and discharge lines all require an upgrade at an estimated cost of $31,000. Shaw added that grease from McDonald’s and Taco Bell has caused some wear-and-tear on the station.

“With this upgrade,” he said, “it will serve the city for another 30 years.”

Ironton Mayor Rich Blankenship read a proclamation recognizing Eagle Scout Andrew McCown’s service project, which was upgrading and improving Edna Kopacz Park at 2621 S. Eighth St.

McCown, 16, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 106 and his project included installing benches, erecting a sign, fresh paint for equipment and painting the park’s surrounding fence.

“It looks great,” Kevin Waldo, vice mayor, said. “I have seen it and it is very impressive.”

Council member Aaron Bollinger said a part of Second Street needed repaved and Blankenship said he was aware of the shoddy paving and was withholding payment to the contractor until it was fixed.

Bollinger also expressed concern about a backhoe parked in the road where Elm Street turns into Fifth Street.

Council member Craig Harvey said the school zone markings in front of Ironton High School need repainted so they are more visible and Waldo said the turn lane paint at Park Avenue and Sixth Street has faded.

“People proceed straight out of the right-hand turn lane,” he said. “Until it’s painted people need to consider it one lane no matter what direction they are going.”
