ROME TOWNSHIP — Right now no charges will be filed in the suspected fireworks death of a Rome Township couple, according to County Prosecuting Attorney Brigham Anderson.
Over the July 4 holiday, fireworks were set off that caused a fire at the home of Leo and Betty Sayre that ended in their deaths. Leo Sayre, 78, had gone outside to see what had hit his house. On seeing it was on fire, he rushed back in to try to save his bedridden wife, Betty, 76. Both died inside their home.
“The fire marshal has turned over evidence to our office and there were numerous people in the area setting them off,” Anderson said. “It has yet to be determined who set off the fireworks. At this time we are not seeking an indictment.”
However the investigation remains ongoing.
“It is an open investigation and there is no suspect at this point,” he said.
