PORTSMOUTH — Josh Zornes finished his second college golf season second.

Second team, that is.

The Shawnee State Bears sophomore capped off an outstanding week at the Mid-South Conference championships with a birdie putt on the 54th hole to finish the round with a 79.

With his third straight day of scoring in the 70s, Zornes comprised a three-day total of 223 and tied for sixth place overall in the tournament held in Bardstown, Ky.

The sixth place tie with Cumberland’s Ryan Botts and Lindsey Wilson’s Faderico Navarro earned Zornes a second team selection on the All-MSC team.

“Zornes deserves anything he gets. He’s the hardest working golfer I’ve ever been associated with,” said Shawnee State assistant coach David Hopkins.

Zornes is a former two-time first team all-district golfer for the Ironton Fighting Tigers. He was a four-year letterman at Ironton where he helped the team to the 2008 SEOAL championship and was a member of the 2009 state tournament qualifying team.

Earlier this season, Zornes was named to the Miami-Hamilton all-tournament team.

Last season he was the medalist at the Ohio-Chillicothe Tournament, runner-up at the Ohio State-Lima Baron Invitational, and a Georgetown Bluegrass Spring Classic all-tournament team.

He was also a member of the Georgetown Bluegrass Fall Classic all-tournament team in 2012.
