IRONTON — Dewey Greear, 82, a loving father and dedicated educator, passed away Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at his residence.
He was born on Dec. 23, 1926, and raised in Morgan County, West Liberty, Ky. He was the son of the late Noah P Greear and Pearl Perry Greear. His wife Linnie Roland Greear; his sisters, Eva Lee Boone, Margaret Richards, and Ernest Marie Schenierle preceded him in death.
Dewey committed his life to caring for his family. He is survived by three sons: Dewey and Janet Greear of Ashland, Ky., Asa and Lydia Greear of St. Augustine, Fla., Dan Greear and life partner Charles Tomlin of Columbus, Ohio, one daughter: Patricia and James Estep of Ironton, one sister: Katherine McGregor of Clawson, Mich., 11 grandchildren: Matthew and Tina Greear of Parkersburg, W.Va., Mike and Sabrina Brown of South Point, Amber Jo Greear of Portland, Ore., Thaddeus Greear of Frankfort, Ky., Jeremiah Greear of Tallahassee, Fla., Sunshine Grant Trimble of Coal Grove, Jessica Greear Stotler and Ryan of Campbellsville, Ky., Timothy Greear of Ashland, Ky., Jessica Ritzman of Tocoma, Wash., Jeremy Estep and Nora Estep both of Paintsville, Ky. Seventeen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive him.
Dewey provided quality education to high school and college students. He held a Bachelors of Science from Eastern Kentucky University and Masters of Science Rank 1 from Morehead State University. He taught high school in Morgan County, Wolfe County, Breathitt County, and Anna, Ohio. He was Professor of Biological Sciences at Ashland Community College, Ashland, Kentucky, from 1967 to 1983. Retired since 1983, he lived in Ironton.
Dewey was a faithful member of the Community Missionary Baptist Church in Ironton. He was part of the Cox Masonic Lodge of Wolfe County. His family and friends will dearly miss him.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Sheridan Freewill Baptist Church in South Point with Rev’s Randy Patrick and Les Boggs officiating. The body will lie in state one hour before the service. Friends may call Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. at the Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home, 509 S. Sixth St., Ironton. Masonic services will be 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
