Out with the old, in with the new and then adding more new trees is Ironton In Bloom’s focus for this year’s Arbor Day tree planting.

At 4 pm. on Thursday, April 24, at the Etna Street Park on the corner of Fourth and Etna streets, Ironton In Bloom will meet to plant eight lilac trees. Six of the trees will replace dead trees in downtown tree squares and two will be planted at the Etna Street Park.

The funding comes through an Ironton block grant, which the Ironton Lawrence County Community Action Organization is authorized by city council to utilize based on approved city design patterns.

“The biological, environmental and visual beauty of our trees will be celebrated,” Carol Allen, of Ironton In Bloom, said.

Ironton In Bloom’s Mike Pearson said the DuPont-Sunoco-Sun Coke Community Advisory Panel will plant a Little Leaf Linden tree in the park at the same time.

“Every year the advisory panel helps us with this event,” Pearson said. “(Ironton In Bloom) is spending $1,400 on trees and CAP is spending $500.”

The DuPont-Sunoco-Sun Coke Community Advisory Panel is a Citizen’s Advisory Panel serving Boyd and Greenup counties in Kentucky and Lawrence and Scioto Counties in Ohio.
