Black history honored

Several good things are happening around Lawrence County.
Here are some of the highlights for this week.
• The Upper Township Fire Department held a chili cook-off that featured more than 15 recipes and other vendors. The annual event helped not only the fire department to cover equipment needs, but to help another organization as well. That organization was the Backpack Buddies at Campbell Chapel that received the canned food donated by eventgoers.
• Burlington Elementary presented a display for Black History Month that featured momentous events throughout history such as the first African-American church in Ohio, which is located in Burlington.
• Third-graders in Lori Donahue’s class at Burlington Elementary got the opportunity to bring one of their books to life when Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Wilson and his K-9 partner, Hemi, visited the school on Friday. Being able to bring learning to life provides the students with the experience to associate the book to a visual context and is something they will always remember. We commend the Sheriff’s Office and Donahue for collaborating to make this happen.
