As we begin the first full week of 2014, some good news highlighted our communities.

• Isaiah Hakeem Green was the first baby born in the Tri-State area in 2014. Green weighed 7 pounds 5 ounces at King’s Daughters Medical Center. The New Year’s baby was born at 3:29 a.m. Isaiah’s proud parents are Dustin Green and Dashianna Spencer of Ironton. We want to welcome all of our communities’ newest residents.

• Mia Wilson, Ironton High senior, was recently nominated by United States Sen. Sherrod Brown and State Rep. Bill Johnson to attend the United States Air Force Academy. We commend Wilson for choosing to serve in the military and look forward following up on her future endeavors.

• Family Dollar Inc. announced its plan to open a new location at the Charlie Creek Plaza in South Point in addition to other locations around the county. The store is scheduled to open in the spring of 2014, and we applaud the decision to invest in our county.

• Mason McMillian, an 8-year-old Burlington Elementary student was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at the beginning of last month. Organizers and residents are holding a fundraiser to help the family with costs associated with Mason’s treatments on Feb. 8 at the South Point Community Center. We hope all county residents can get involved and help Mason overcome this obstacle.
