HAMLIN, W.Va. — With Christmas two days away, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets were in a giving mood.
Fortunately, they decided on a different gift as they edged the Lincoln County Lady Panthers 46-45.
Coal Grove had an 11-point halftime lead but nearly gave the game away due in part to 13-for-28 foul shooting.
“We had a decent lead at the half even with all of our fouls,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“We got a little lazy and let them back in the game. We shot poor at the foul line but we managed to hang on and get a win.”
Jacy Jones scored 19 points to lead the Lady Hornets (4-5). Leslie Mulkey and Morgan Sites scored 9 points each.
Lindsey Prichard had 22 points for the Lady Panthers (2-5).
Roach said several players made key contributions in other areas besides scoring.
“Summer Willis was rebounding the ball well. Leah Crum went out early with an ankle sprain, but Brittany Webb came in and played good defense,” said Roach.
Lincoln County took an 11-6 first quarter lead, but Mulkey scored 7 points and Jones added 6 more as Coal Grove outscored the Lady Panthers 21-6 to take a 28-17 halftime lead.
The lead was 39-30 after three quarters.
Coal Grove was just 5-of-16 from the line in the fourth quarter but held on for the win.
