Betty Pennington

Betty Lou Pennington, 77, of Hanging Rock, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at her home. She was born July 21, 1936, in Pine Grove, the daughter of the late Charles and Helen Marshall. She was the wife of Bob Pennington, who survives.

She was a 1954 graduate of Rock Hill High School and was a housewife and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law.

She also was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Charles William Pennington and Krisi Lynn Bridges; one sister, Shirley Leslie; two brothers, Donald Marshall and Richard “Dickie” Marshall; and one son-in-law, Barry Bridges.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include four children, Debbie (Danny) Smathers, Bobbi (Randy) Gilmore, Greg (Sharon) Pennington and Kathi Bridges; seven grandchildren, Bobby Childers, Alicia Childers, Courtni (Ryan) Thomas, Adam (Christy Michelle) Gilmore, Travis (Erin) Gilmore, Barry Bridges II and Nick (Emily) Bridges; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Brenda (Bernie) Pertuset; three sisters-in-law, Pat (Bill) Robinson, Glenda Marshall and Karen Marshall; and two brothers-in-law, Kenny (Karen) Pennington and Billy (Ruth) Pennington.

The family would like to extend their appreciation and thank you to Hospice Care Center for its loving care.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be 10 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Bobby Childers, Adam Gilmore, Travis Gilmore, Nick Bridges, Randy Gilmore and Ryan Thomas. Wanda Blake

Wanda L. Blake, 69, of Lake Alfred, Fla., and formerly of Gallipolis, died Saturday morning Dec. 14, 2013, at her residence.

Born Jan. 18, 1944, in Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Hobart and Goldie Juanita Williams Rice. In addition to her parents, Wanda is preceded by a son, Hobart Ray Wilson, and by a stepson, David Blake.

Wanda was a former employee of Rockwell International and also of Kmart. She was a member of the East Temple Baptist Church in Auburndale, Fla.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Blake; a son, Bill (Linda) Wilson, of Vinton; a daughter, Patty (Ken) Wamsley, of Bidwell; a stepdaughter, Sandra (Richard) Cox, of Gallipolis; a stepson, Darren Blake, of Logan; grandchildren, Jackie Wamsley and Logan Wamsley; great-grandchildren, Caiden Wamsley and Rylei Wamsley; a sister, Vanetta (Bill) Johnson, of Chesapeake; and a brother, Preston (Shirley) Rice, of Columbus. Also surviving are her special friends, Anita Hagwood, of Lake Alfred, and Cheryl Vanduser, of Auburndale.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Waugh-Halley- Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Alfred Holley officiating. Burial will follow in Centenary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the time of service on Wednesday. A time of food and fellowship will follow the committal service at the Centenary United Methodist Church.

Shirley Shepard

Shirley A. Shepard, 71, of South Point, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point. Charles Nance

Charles Edward “Pee Wee” Nance, 67, of Flatwoods, Ky., died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky. The family will have a memorial service at a later date. Burial will be at Bentley Cemetery in Carter County, Ky. Nathan Lewis

Nathan Manuel Lewis, 85, of Ironton, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at the Community Hospice Center in Ashland, Ky. The Logan, W.Va., native was born Aug. 29, 1928, a son to the late Nathan and Mattie (Heard) Lewis, Sr.

Mr. Lewis attended Ironton schools and eventually joined the United States Army. Nathan served in the Korean War. While in service he earned the Good Conduct Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He later worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He was of the Baptist faith and was dearly loved by many.

Nathan is survived by a brother, Herbert (Carolyn) Lewis, of Ironton; two sisters, Rosemary Easterling, of Huntington, and Vivian Pratt, of Ironton; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Nathan was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Lewis; and a sister, JoAnn Roberts.

Funeral services will be noon on Friday at the Tracy Brammer – Monroe Funeral Home with pastor Douglas C. Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Greenup County, Ky., with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post No. 8850. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the funeral home.

James Estep

James A. Estep, 72, of Ironton, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at the Community Hospice Care Center. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Reed Funeral Home, Greenup, Ky., by Pete Roar. John Keyser

John William Keyser, 53, of Huntington, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. There will be private family services. Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home.
