RIO GRANDE — Now that is what you call a shut down defense.

The Chesapeake Panthers had trouble scoring, so they decided to make it even tougher for Logan and they limited the Chieftains to a mere 9 points in the second half and posted a 43-32 win Saturday in the 8th Annual Newt Oliver Coaches Classic.

Chesapeake shot 41 percent from the floor by hitting 16-of-39 shots. The defense limited Logan to 13-of-32 shooting for 40.6 percent.

The game was tied on four occasions and the lead changed hands seven times.

Logan was up 8-7 after the first quarter and the lead was 23-19 at the half.

Chesapeake’s defense really went to work in the second half. The Panthers’ defense not only held Logan to 9 points in the second half, but held the Chieftains without a field goal over the final 5:48 of the game.

The Panthers rallied to go ahead 34-27 after quarters and built their biggest lead at 11 points with 3:56 to play.

Caleb Heffner had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Chesapeake (4-2).

Andrew Saunders added 11 points and 4 rebounds. Nate Smith had 4 assists and Gage Rhoades 3 steals.

Logan (2-1) was paced by Chance Cox with 11 points and Kevin Fisher had 10. Isaiah Smith grabbed 9 rebounds.
