HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall football team will wear the “75” helmets for the remainder of the season, the school announced Saturday.

“Members of the team approached me, Coach (Doc) Holliday and our administration and asked if they could continue this tribute after playing the first Nov. 14 road game since the 1970 plane crash,” Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick said.

“I think this is an excellent idea, because it shows how important the history of our program is to our student-athletes.”

Marshall won 45-34 at Tulsa Thursday night. The Nov. 14, 1970 crash took 75 lives as the team and its staff and supporters were returning to Huntington aboard Southern Airlines Flight 932 following a 17-14 loss at East Carolina earlier that afternoon.

The large “75” decal is on the left side of the helmets, replacing one of the traditional Marshall “block M” logos.

“When these young men come into our program, they quickly learn what it means to put on that jersey,” Holliday said. “Remembering those 75 people isn’t about just one day; it’s about a mentality here.”

The Herd (7-3 overall, 5-1 Conference USA) will be back in action next Saturday (Nov. 23). when it travels to FIU (1-8, 1-4) for a 6 p.m. kickoff in a game that will be televised by Fox College Sports.
