WESTWOOD, Ky. — When Fairland played Fairview there was nothing fair about the game.

The Fairland Lady Dragons held an unfair advantage once they unleashed their defense as they shut down the high-scoring Lady Eagles 59-44.

“The defense is coming along. We held them to 17 points in the second half. That’s pretty good defense,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan.

“They’ve been scoring 60 points or more a game and they have three or four players who can score the ball. We did a real nice job defensively.”

Besides their defense, the Lady Dragons used a career-high 15 points by Jaimie Phillips to spark the win. Megan Brooks scored 11 points and Kennon Clarkson added 9.

Phillips also had 11 rebounds as Fairland controlled the glass 44-31. Samantha Lamb grabbed 8 rebounds for the Lady Dragons.

The defense generated 17 steals with Clarkson swiping 5.

Fairland led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter but fell behind 27-25 at the half.

Phillips scored 6 points in the third quarter as Fairland outscored the Lady Eagles 17-9 to take a 42-36 lead.

The defense held Fairview to just 8 points in the fourth quarter to post the easy win.

“We didn’t make any adjustments. We just needed to make shots. We had them in the first half and just didn’t finish,” said Buchanan. “We took better care of the ball, especially since they pressed.”

The Lady Dragons face Coal Grove Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
