The Ironton Farmers Market has concluded its first season as an organized market.
The market is a project of Ironton aLive and board member Sam Heighton volunteered to be the market manager.
“Many special events helped to bring in new shoppers each weekend,” Heighton said. “The market season was 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. from late April through October on Fridays and Saturdays.”
The market was held on South Second Street in front of the old Ironton train station and was built specifically for market events. The venue’s 19 spaces were eight or 12 feet wide and, as the season moved on, all spaces were filled; sometimes there was an overflow.
On special event Saturdays, music was supplied by different groups and the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization’s Family Fun Days were held in conjunction with the market in June and August.
Members of Ironton In Bloom supplied free corn of the cob at the corn fest in August, free tomato and bologna sandwiches in September and free hot biscuits and fried apples in October. These three festivals will be held annually, according to Carol Allen, chairperson for Ironton
In Bloom.
At the vendors’ request, a potluck dinner concluded the official season on Nov. 7 at the RoNa Theater. It was evident this group of people enjoy each other’s company. It was also evident that they know how to cook.
A meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan.16, 2014, at the Ironton City Center for all wishing to take part next year’s market. All local farmers and produce vendors are invited to attend.
