After last month’s successful corn festival at the Ironton Farmers Market where 120 ears of buttered corn was given away in a two-hour period, Ironton In Bloom will try to duplicate that concept with tomatoes.

Free sandwiches will be served from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Depot Square in downtown Ironton.

“It’s a pretty major day for the farmers market,” Carol Allen, chair of Ironton In Bloom, said. “We are doing this to show our continued support for the farmers market.”

Allen said the sandwiches could be any combination of tomato, onion and bologna — as long as they have a slice of tomato.

Ironton In Bloom will also be continuing its bulb sale fundraiser at the market, Allen said.

Sam Heighton, manager of the farmers market, said Saturday’s event offers more than just the normal farmers market fare.

“Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital is again helping us all they can,” Heighton said. “Employees from the hospital will be set up doing health screening at the market.”

The screenings will consist of basic medical tests such as blood pressure and pulse checks, Heighton said.

Entertainment will be provided by Kelly’s Bridge Band beginning at 9 a.m. followed by the Gospel Singing Jubilee from the First Baptist Church of Ironton.
