Delayed tax bills due next month
Second half tax bills for manufactured homes are expected to be in the mail on Friday, according to Lawrence County Treasurer Stephen Burcham.
Because of software difficulties in printing the bills, they were not sent out in June along with the other second half property tax bills. That has been corrected and the bills will be due on Friday, Aug. 30.
Mountwest offers opportunity for students to finish
HUNTINGTON, W.Va — Mountwest Community & Technical College is offering an opportunity to equip community members to finish their degrees — no matter when or where they started. On Thursday, Aug. 8, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Mountwest faculty and staff will be available on campus to answer questions and enroll students for the fall semester.
Individuals will be able to have their transcripts reviewed, talk to an admissions counselor, learn about financial aid options, and meet with program faculty. Individuals do not have to have started their education at Mountwest in order to attend. Many degree options are available, including starting a path toward a bachelor’s degree by starting at Mountwest and transferring to one of Mountwest’s four-year college partners. The event is sponsored by First State Bank.
In Cabell, Putnam, Mason and Wayne counties, nearly 30,000 individuals 25 or older have some post-secondary education but have not earned a degree, according to recent U.S. Census data. Subsequently, Mountwest has 5,539 individuals on record who have taken some classes with the college between 2009 and 2012 but have not earned a degree or certificate and are not currently enrolled at the college.
“We understand the time and commitment it takes to complete a degree and that oftentimes life events get in the way,” said Dr. Keith Cotroneo, president of Mountwest. “However, we also understand the value of a degree and want to assist any individual who’s ready to complete their education by providing the resources necessary to achieve their goal.”
