Trimble nips Flyers

GLOUSTER — It was a case of missed opportunities for the St. Joseph Flyers.
The Flyers failed to capitalize on their scoring chances including bases loaded in the seventh inning as they lost 4-2 to the Trimble Tomcats on Wednesday in the Division IV sectional finals.
The Flyers outhit the Tomcats 10-9 but could not get the clutch hit.
Trailing 4-1 in the seventh, St. Joseph put pressure on the Tomcats.
Alexander Ward lined a two-out double and Hunter Pemberton beat out a bunt single. Joseph Payton’s base hit scored Ward and it was 4-2.
A walk loaded the bases but reliever B.J. Losey got a pop out to shortstop to end the game.
Justin Mahlmeister took the complete game loss. He struck out six.
Mahlmeister, Payton, Pemberton and Cole Willis all had two hits each for the Flyers (13-7).
Trimble (17-6) plays in the district semifinals at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Whiteoak at Chillicothe’s Veterans’ Stadium.

MINFORD — The Minford Falcons downed the Chesapeake Panthers 11-4 on Wednesday in the Division III sectional tournament.
Shawn Mersiel went 4-4 and Eli Duduit was 2-4 with four runs batted in to lead the Falcons (10-13).
Jacob Eddy was 2-3 and Joe Bias 2-4 to lead the Panthers.
