State Route 243 slip repair scheduled

BRADRICK — A slip repair project is slated to begin on State Route 243 in Lawrence County, and contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation will impart lane restrictions later this month.

According to Ohio Department of Transportation – District 9 Deputy Director Vaughn Wilson, crews from the Alan Stone Company will begin preliminary operations on Monday, May 20, to correct a slip at the route’s 15.00-mile marker, which is between County Road 36 (McKinney Creek Road) and Township Road 1178 (Hamlin Road), approximately 3.5 miles west of State Route 7 at Bradrick.

Throughout construction, traffic will be maintained in one, nine-foot lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Alan Stone of Cutler, Ohio, was awarded a contract for approximately $209,891 to complete the repairs, and the project is anticipated to be completed in early summer.

A separate slip repair project on State Route 243 is currently under way at the route’s 16.00-mile marker, where the route is reduced to one, nine-foot lane as well. The project site is located between Township Road 1182 (Fitzpatrick Road) and County Road 32 (Eaton Road), and traffic is being maintained with temporary traffic signals. This project is also expected to be completed in early summer.

 

Restoration group sets date for creek float

AID — Symmes Creek Restoration Committee will host its Annual Symmes Creek Float on Saturday, June 1 starting at 9:30 a.m.

This event is free and open to anyone in the Tri-State as well as visitors.

Bring your own canoe or kayak or just show up. There is often room with someone else.

Trip is approximately 8 miles along Symmes Creek starting at the canoe launch site in Arabia (just off 141) in Lawrence County.

Float starts in Arabia and ends at the canoe site at the ballfields in Aid.

Distance running classes offered at Marshall University

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Marshall University’s Recreation Center is offering classes for people who want to train for distance running.

The five-week class is aimed at getting people ready for their first five-kilometer run or for experienced runners who want to improve their times.

A signup event Thursday night will include talks about nutrition, fitness, stretching exercises and even what shoes to wear. After that the first class will be held on May 21.

Barboursville-based running group Tristateracer will reimburse the fees of up to 50 people who take the classes and finish the West Virginia 5k. Championship on June 22 in Huntington. The class costs $29 for rec center members and $35 for nonmembers. The race itself is $20.
